A talented operations support specialist with 15 years of human resources experience in the federal government, Sarah Steenberge started her career as an intern supporting PEO EIS’s Acquisition, Logistics and Technology Enterprise Systems and Services (ALTESS) program in Radford, Virginia.

After interning for ALTESS and supporting the program in a full-time role, Steenberge moved to Fort Belvoir to support PEO EIS’s Human Resources Directorate. In 2015, she moved to Germany to support the U.S. Army Europe G3 Manpower Office. Her experience in Germany expanded her knowledge about force structure, human relations, equal employment opportunities and international relations. She returned to PEO EIS in 2019 to support the Human Resources Directorate where she is responsible for performance management and workforce development. “PEO EIS offers a lot of opportunities for people to excel in their careers,” Steenberge said.

Respected for her positive attitude and organizational skills, Steenberge is passionate about helping people and developing creative solutions to tough problems. Today’s #PEOEISTeammateTuesday, Steenberge answered questions about her career and life.

What are you doing to inform the workforce about the Contribution-based Compensation and Appraisal System (CCAS)?
I organized a roadshow to educate the workforce about the importance of CCAS and the best way to use it. CCAS is a performance management system that is designed to measure the contribution a person contributes to the mission of the organization. In CCAS, you have to understand what your role is in your career and the impact it has on your organization's mission. Every spreadsheet you touch and task you perform should be tied to how they benefit the bigger picture.

How many civilians did PEO EIS hire last year?
We hired 112 people. The human resources team constantly tries to identify innovative ways to recruit and communicate with our workforce. Our civil-service workforce currently includes about 540 people.

Why have you been so successful in your career?
I am open-minded. I take everyone’s constructive feedback into account before I make a decision. I am flexible. I am able to adapt to situations if the mission changes, while remaining creative, innovative and strategic about how changes are made.

What does a good leader do?
A good leader listens and finds positive ways to motivate individuals' strengths and weaknesses. They encourage growth and development.

What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about my work and am honored to help people every day. I love being at home, playing with my children and helping them create new adventures in their lives.

What advice do you have for PEO EIS employees?
Take control of your career and seek out opportunities.

What is your proudest moment?
Earning a master’s degree in human relations from the University of Oklahoma is my proudest moment. I did it while working full time and raising two young children.

If you could thank one person for the role they played in your life, who would it be and why?
My husband is my rock. He enabled me to pursue career opportunities.
